Career Prep

When preparing for your career, there are a couple of things that you need to do in order to be successful. One of those things is having a strong resume. For me, it was always a daunting task when creating a resume. What do I put on there? How do I make it look? How long does it need to be? All of these questions have haunted me as I have begun my life in the professional environment. I knew it was important to have a good resume, so I will go over the steps that I took to make mine, with the hope that it can help you feel more confident about your resume!

The first thing that I did was take my resume to my college career center. Once there, I had them look over my resume. They gave me great tips like removing my home address, adding dates to when I received certificates, and making sure that my resume was one page in length. This really helped me build a foundation for my resume.

Once there, I took it to at least three working professionals to glance over my resume and give feedback. Here they were able to help me add skills to my resume to showcase all the things that I bring to the table. They were also able to help me create strong explanations for the jobs that I have had and currently have. The tips that they gave me here were to use metrics within my job descriptions to give measurable goals that I had achieved within my time in the role.

Finally, I researched hiring processes while in my Human Resources class, and I found that most companies hire through artificial intelligence now. That’s crazy! Here is the video if you want to learn more: AI Hiring. One thing that I learned about AI, is that it is better to give AI black and white resumes than color ones. So, I made sure that my resume was black and white.

All of these things have helped me to create a better, more professional resume. Of course, there are still things that I need to add and adjust to my resume as it changes, but having basic knowledge has helped me to feel less daunting about it. If you have fears about making a resume, my advice is that you just jump in and start! There are so many people that are willing to help you along the way!
